An Almost-Lost Art: Glass Gilding
True gold-leaf window signs are rare finds these days. Most window and door displays with such an appearance are now made with other materials, chosen because they can be more easily and quickly applied.
Reserve, a store in Los Angeles, had their sign applied by hand, with real gold leaf, from artist John Downer.
We hired our good friend John Downer, who is a professional sign painter & typographer, to fly to LA to do gold leaf lettering on our store window & transom. Glass gilding is becoming a lost art that only a few dozen people in the United States still know how perform.
Reserve also filmed an interview with Downer on his process. He gets into amazing details about his design process and the materials he uses.
